Homophobia: By Any Other Name

Over the past few months, I've witnessed and have been victim to a hive mind of individuals who seem to think that homosexuality is being forced down their throat by the media and activist groups. They claim that they are not homophobic, however, they also seem to be adamant about their "right" to not be exposed to anything of a homosexual nature and that such things are grotesque to them.

I'm sorry, but by definition, that is homophobia. They are afraid of being exposed to anything of a homosexual nature because it sickens them and threatens their sensibilities. If many forms of media throughout history did not bring important social issues to the attention of society, atrocities such as slavery and the discrimination of women in the workplace would still be legal.

I do not make it a habit to force my sexuality upon others. I do not even like to show affection in public settings. However, if I so choose to not hide my sexuality, I should have the right to be treated with respect and dignity and not be discriminated against. As of this date, I do not have that right.

The phrase "fuck you" comes to mind whenever I hear someone babel on about how homosexuality is overplayed in the media. They themselves do not know what it is like to be treated like a second class citizen. They are sitting pretty with their current opinions which are enforced by law.

Homosexuality is not a lifestyle. It is not a choice. Sexuality does not conform to societies social norms. Things will change for the better over the course of history like they always have.

What's more shocking than the attention that homosexuality is getting in the media is the injustices that are enforced by today's popular opinions. Homophobes are either going to look foolish to future generations, or they are going to have to deal with their own prejudices.
